The bulk container for liquids to be stored with minimum contact with atmosphere is opened at the bottom with a filling and discharge valve. The bottom half of the container is cylindrical and the top half is tapered. The container is lined by a flexible membrane. The membrane has a number of horizontal external hoops (18) fixed to the upper half. The top of the membrane is covered by a plate (20) which covers the whole area of the container. The space above the plate is vented. Level gauges in the form of a rod (21) or a weight (27) suspended from a cord (23) over pulleys (24, 25) are fitted. As the level falls in the container the hoops fit inside each other until the plate reaches the bottom.
