Electromagnetic brake for towed vehicle - has magnetic material disc to exert force on electromagnets carried by brake actuating levers

Drum brake for a towed vehicle has a conventional brake drum (9) and backplate (6) with two brake shoes. These brake shoes can be operated by a cable and hand lever. In addition, an electro-magnetic control is operated by the brake pedal of the towing vehicle. A disc of magnetic material (11) is rigidly attached to the brake drum. Two levers (19) mounted on diametrically opposite pivots (14) carry electro-magnets (22) at their free ends. When these magnets are energised they are attracted to the disc and the consequent friction exerts a turning moment on the lever which applies the brake.
