The impeller of the compressor in a jet engine consists of a drum to which successive rings of blades are fitted. This replaces an assembly of separate discs carrying the blades. The drum has a thin outer skin (1) and a thin inner skin (2) with a core (3) between them. The outer skin has corrugations forming annular indents (4) and tensioning rings (5) are inserted in these to hold the drum assembly together. The drum has radial openings through which the roots of the blades (7) are fitted. These openings occur between the indentations (4) and the stator guide blades (8) are opposite the indentations and their tensioning rings (5). A labyrinth seal (9) is formed between each tensioning ring and the end of the corresponding stator blade.
