The reciprocating piston engine has a two-armed lever (22), the opposing end areas of which are each respectively connected to coaxially guided working pistons (1, 2; 3, 4) of identical size. Torque is transmitted by way of an eccentric mechanism (36, 36'), the rod (44) of which is pivoted on one of the lever arms (37) between the bearing point and an end area (20) of the two-armed lever (22). For the balancing of masses a further similar eccentric mechanism (35, 35') is pivoted on the opposing lever arm (38) in a symmetrical arrangement about the bearing point so that the common centre of gravity of all moving parts of the engine lies on the lever axis (23). The engine dimension in the direction of the lever axis is especially small resulting in a compact engine when four piston-cylinder units are each respectively arranged in a plurality of planes. <IMAGE>
