The wire, for a security fence for e.g. a power station, consists of a zinc-plated iron wire from which the mesh of the wire fence is made. The iron wire has a longitudinal slot set into its outer surface. The slot holds a lacquered monitoring wire. The monitoring wire is flush with the surface of the iron wire which is covered in an outer plastic sheath. The monitoring wire indicates when the fence is cut and since it is located in the slot it cannot be removed to form an 'electrical bridge' without triggering the alarm.
