The materials being subjected to shearing test leads are e.g. soils. The device (1) has a container for a sample, a device for application of a load, a drive producing a movement in the shearing direction and a dynamometer. The head plate transmitting the load is movable only in the load direction perpendicular to the shearing plane, and the two halves of the sample container can carry out only a relative movement in the shearing direction, i.e. perpendicular to the load direction.
