The cup shaped bearing element is made from a cylindrical piece of raw material which is mounted in a matrix (4). A die on which a precision ball (5) is mounted, is pressed against one side of the material. A counterdie (8) with a second ball (10) is pressed against the other side of the workpiece. The radius of this second ball is approx. twice the radius of the first ball. The first ball which is used is a few micrometer smaller than the required finished size of the workpiece. After the first pressing cycle, the steel ball is replaced by a ball which will give the final size.
