Butt welding profiles consisting of bell-shaped gaps are cut in the ends of pipes or workpieces with a circular cross-section. The shape of the gap is determined by the radius at the root of the gap sides and also the slope of the flanks of the gap. A cutting burner is located under the end of the pipe so the axis of the burner flame is inclined w.r.t. the end of the pipe. Either the pipe or the burner may be rotated to form the gap, and the burner may use a conventional nozzle; or a nozzle forming several small jets of flame; or a curved slot nozzle producing a curved flame with a large radius of curvature at 90 degrees to the direction of the flame.
|
