The invention relates to an effervescent formulation containing florfenic ol or an antibiotic of related structure. When introduced into water, the ef fervescent formulation is dissolved with minimal or no agitation and provide s a solution or a homogeneous dispersion of florfenicol. The formulations ar e typically in the form of free flowing powders, granules or tablets. The ef fervescent formulations are useful for the treatment of bacterial infections and allow for the rapid dispersion and dissolution of florfenicol in the dr inking water systems of an animal in need of such treatment.
