1532721 Automatic control of cigarette machine HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 2 Aug 1977 [6 Aug 1976] 32293/77 Heading G3R In a cigarette rod machine of the type in which excess tobacco in a supply stream is removed and recirculated, the height of the stream before and after removal is measured and the values "correlated" (quotient or difference is obtained) to form a control signal for adjusting the supply. The object is to minimize the excess, which is deteriorated by being recirculated. In the embodiment, the height of the stream before trimming 4 is detected by an array of photo-cells 38 associated with a light source 29 and that after trimming is taken to be that of the trimming knife 6 which is measured by an inductive device 8. The quotient of these values is obtained at 42, is indicated at 43, and is compared with a desired value from potentiometer 47 at 46. Any difference is multiplied at 48 by a speed signal from a tacho 49 on the main drive 51 of the machine. The result is used as the set point for a closed loop system which controls the speed of a feed motor 54. The height of the trimming knife is controlled in a known manner in response to a radiation gauge at the output of the rod forming section.
