Processes and compositions are described for the use in smoking tobacco flavor and aroma augmenting, enhancing and imparting compositions and as smoking tobacco aroma and taste imparting materials of hydroxy cyclohexenone derivatives having the generic formula: <IMAGE> wherein one of X and Y is a keto moiety having the structure: <IMAGE> and the other of X and Y is a carbinol moiety having the structure: <IMAGE>
