A cam disc is mounted on a shaft parallel to the guide along which moves the wire type printing head. The shaft can displace the printing head (16) transversely relative to the axis of the platen. A three bar linkage system is controlled by the hand-operated distance selection unit whereby a peg which interacts with the cam disc in order to move the shaft onto the pivot of the cam disc. The peg engages in a slit formed in the disc and follows a path which varies in distance from the axis of the shaft. A lever which turns about a fixed pins is used to move the peg between two positions.
