Stabilised fuel slurry prepn. - in the form of thixotropic oil-in-water emulsions, esp. for use in blast furnaces

The slurries contain 30-70 (pref. 30-50) wt.% of a liq. fuel oil (I), 25-65 wt.% of solid fuel particles (II), with dias. 1/4 (pref. =1/8) in., 2-30 wt.% water, and 0.2-5 wt.% of an emulsifier (III) capable of forming a thixotropic, water external-oil high internal phase emulsion. The slurry is prepd. by mixing, with agitation, (I), (III), (II) and water, (II) having dias. =2 in., to form the emulsion, and then comminute (II), by mechanical mixing, to the required size. The mixing is effected at >100 degrees F (pref. >=140 degrees F). (I) may be a petroleum oil or coal tar, and (II) coal, coal by-prods. or solid petroleum residues. (II) may be "direct shipping coal" or "run-of-mine" coal, and the stabilised slurry may be directly used for injection into blast furnaces (pref. with steam atomisation) or in boilers.
