The compression ignition engine (10) has a piston (14) operating in a cylinder (12) which communicates with an air storage chamber (X) through ports (16). When the piston (14) passes the ports (16) only the air trapped in the combustion chamber (Y) is compressed to the pressure necessary to ignite the fuel supplied from the fuel injection system (Z). With this type of compression-ignition engine only about 10% of the charge air is compressed to the maximum pressure. This reduces the forces in the engine structure and enables it to be made lighter. It also allows the engine to work more closely to the constant pressure cycle than is the case with a Diesel engine.
