The ballistic shell follows a flight path accurately without spiralling, so that the energy otherwise required to propel it along the rifling of the barrel is saved. This also reduces the wear of the gun barrel. More accurate stabilising is ensured by means of vanes housed before firing in guide slots in the shell, and ejected by the gases of combustion as the projectile leaves the barrel. The vanes have inclined sliding surfaces which run as the move across the sliding surfaces of the guides and slots, as they are pressed by the gases passing along a bore through circumferential holes backwards and outwards. Ribs which are retained in the narrow slots prevent the escape of the vanes which are aligned in the slots of a plug.
|
