A telephone exchange uses time division multiplexing techniques with central control and includes a memory for strong subscriber numbers. An operator keyboard selects groups of subscriber connections to determine state for display. A keyboard selects groups of subscriber connections for storage in a memory. These are verified by a comparator when selected and are indicated as occupied by another memory whose contents are transmitted with those of the other memory to an operator position for display. Subscriber numbers are converted downstream of the memory. Multiplexing is used to exchange data between the operator control and position.
