Waveguide with flange joints absorbing tension and compression - has alignment spindle with indentations and cavities fitting matched surfaces at interface

The flange connection is for a pair of waveguides for use in wideband directional finding. The flanges are made with holes for fixing both and flat faces which when brought together will form the interface between the two sections. The joint is capable of absorbing tension and compression and is therefore be suitable for mounting on mobile equipment. The individual circular waveguides (1) are first fitted with an alignment spindle. Indentations are then brought into the outer surfaces of the individual guides to correspond with the cavities in the holes of the fitted flanges. The connecting flange is then fitted to the end of the tube and secured via the cavities. The two flanges are subsequently ground down to produce a flat surface. The holes (14) are thereafter drilled and the bolts inserted. The alignment spindle is hollow and is used for supporting the grinding tool which produces the plain fitting surfaces.
