On a blade shaft with strip-shaped blades, for making flat wood chips of set length, blades are set at an acute angle to the shaft axis. Each is bent outwards, with alternating radially outward and radially inward cutting edges, with all the outward ones lying on the same circle. The inner ones are formed by rear side grooves of varying depth, with these edges also all lying in a common circle. Among blade sections for any one chip pocket, the radially outer cutting edge is sited near the following partition stem piece, with a lug exactly aligned with the radial partition edge which determines chip length. Output and chip quality are improved.
