The cable element are stranded in two opposite directions by twisting the gathered elements within a stranding path. The latter is limited by two stranding points (47, 48), behind the first of which and directly in front of the second one are mounted rotary stranding heads (54, 63). Each head contains parts pressing against the strand and radially movable round its circumference. The force application between each stranding head and the strand can be temporarily cancelled. Between the stranding heads, which apply changing force to the strand sections, and each stranding point is mounted a rotary stranding head (50, 59) which continuously surrounds the strand (66) with positive peripheral force.
