IC engine speed limiting system - has contact breaker with parallel short circuiting switch operative when contact breaker is closed

The contact breaker (4) of an internal combustion engine can be short circuited by a centrifugal switch. The latter has a rotating core (12) driven from the engine at engine speed. A weight (10) is held by a spring (11) in a slot in the core and carries a spring contact (9). When the weight moves under centrifugal force the spring contact rungs against a fixed contact (8) to complete the shorting circuit. The fixed contact is in the form of two arcs of a circle with a gap between them. The circuit is opened as the moving contact passes the gap which happens, while the contact breaker points open.
