A composite yarn for flame-resistant textile fabric comprises a central strand of continuous inorganic filaments surrounded by a structure of organic textile fibres bearing a flame-resist compsn. The yarn comprises (a) a core of inorganic filaments wrapped with the organic fibres, or (b) a core of continuous inorganic filaments rand which are twisted >=1 strands of organic fibre. The organic fibres pref. comprise >=50 wt.% (esp. 70-85 wt.%) of the yarn. >=80% of the organic fibres are pref. wool. Suitable flame-resistant compsns. are (NH4)2SO4, H3BO3, Sn, Ti or Zr pptd. compsns., phosphonic acids, etc. The inorganic filaments are pref. fine glass multifilaments. A low tex yarn is pref. used. In embodiment for two yarns are pref. doubled together in the opposite sense of twist. Alternatively, the yarn is doubled in the opposite direction of twist. with an all-wool yarn or other yarn. Used for upholstery, curtain fabrics, or for garments, esp. for protective garments for racing drivers, foundry workers, garage attendants, etc. The fabrics are comfortable and wear well, while offering protection against a petrol fire. They are also light.
|
