PURPOSE:To form nonmagnetic protective coating layers which are excellent in an adhesive property to magnetic layers, hardness, toughness, and friction characteristic and to improve the sliding resistance, corrosion resistance and recording density of the recording medium by forming the coating layers of elements of specific 1st and 2nd groups. CONSTITUTION:Nonmagnetic underlying layers 12, 12', the magnetic layers 13, 13', and the nonmagnetic protective coating layers 14, 14' are successively formed on the front and rear surfaces of a nonmagnetic substrate 11. The coating layers 14, 14' consist of at least two kinds of the elements selected from the 1st group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W, and at least one kind of the elements selected from the 2nd group consisting of N, C, O, and B. The content of one element of the 1st group is 0.1 to 99.9at.% with the total content of the elements of the 1st group as 100at.%. The total content of the elements of the 1st group is 10 to 99at.% with the total content of the elements of the 1st and 2nd groups as 100at.%. On the other hand, the underlying layers 12, 12' consist of metals, such as Cr, Mo, W, Cr, Cr-Ti, Cr-Si, and Cr-W. |
