A process for the catalytic treatment of a material containing solid contaminants wherein the material is passed at elevated temperature and pressure over one or more fixed catalyst bends within a reactor (e.g. hydrodesulphurization of a residual oil) which reactor contains upstream of the catalyst bed(s) a filtering device for the removal of contaminants, a filtering device being used which comprises a plurality of filter units, the total surface area of the filter unit for initial contact being substantially higher than the cross-sectional surface are of the reactor and the dimensions of a filter unit being such as to allow its introduction and removal via the reactor inlet.
