An electrolytic cell comprises at least a pair of electrodes in which one electrode is located above the other with a membrane interposed between the electrodes. One of the electrodes is an anode disposed below the membrane and the other is a cathode disposed above the membrane. The length of the conductors connecting adjacent cells together is reduced in comparison to conventional cells. System is suitable for electrolysis of an aq. soln. of NaCl-.
