The indexing drive which controls individual sections of machine tools, e.g. trimming presses, transfer machines automatic packing and filling machines etc., has a motor driving through a clutch with a roller-type locking mechanism. This has a roller cage spring-loaded into the engagement position between driving and driven races, and released by holding one or more cage cams. The clutch is preceded on the driving side (10) by a freewheel (5), whose driving race (5a) is coupled to the motor, typically by an external gear ring (1). An identical second assembly (6, 15) is coupled to the first by a driven gear (2) of the same size, and the two driven shafts (18, 19) are also coupled together by gears (3, 4) of the same size. The pawls (26, 27) of the two clutches (14, 15) engage simultaneously, and the driving motor is of the reversing type.
