The stopping and metering device for cereal mills, e.g. grist mills, includes and electromagnet controlled by the drive motor current. It adjusts the charge feed to the grinding tools through a flap valve. The feed to the grinding chamber can be stopped when the drive motor is switched off. Beeore the drive motor is started, the grinding chamber can thus be kept clear to prevent excessive starting torque. At any other time the charge feed can be manually stopped. An electromagnet (9) in the power supply to the drive motor for the grinding tools (5) on its shaft (6) in the grinding chamber (3), controls position of a flap valve in the neck (2) of the grist hopper (1) as a function of the motor load. The armature (10) acts through a linkage (12, 13, 13a) with a spring return on the flap valve spindle (14). The valve can be locked in the OFF position by a lock screw in an elongated slot to fix the link (12).
