An electro-magnetically actuator forms the basis of a controlled tactile sensing unit for a Braille type system. Individual Braille type symbols are formed by a pin (3) that is moved axially to project beyond a surface (1). Actuation is provided by coil (6) which when energised causes a permanent Magnet (4) to rotate. The rotation results in an inclined surface (7) moving against a mating surface producting axial movement. The wedge action provides a mechanical retention without permanent coil excitation.
