The saw assembly with bandsaws or similar separate saw units, divides a block into planks or other pieces of prescribed thickness. The saws are set in tandem, mutually offset by the thickness of a cut piece, each with a centre cutting device with rollers on cross ways adjustable chairs moves relative to a centre plane. The transmission drives for the centre cutting devices (I, II) on the first and last saws (1, 1') at least, are in the form of a double staged, centrally operated change-over gears, with a stage geared down to the chair adjustment in a ratio corresponding to the number of pieces. In the other stage the down-gearing ratios are inversely proportional. This enures that the overal tolerance is evenly apportioned among all the cut parts.
