The appts. is to generate a gaseous test sample from a test liquid for atomic absorption spectrophotometry and includes a carrier gas conduit tube(22) which acts as a carrier gas input to a sample holder(16). A carrier gas outlet(34) leads from the sample holder to a measuring cuvette or flame. The appts. also has a liquid reagent supply device comprising a tightly sealed reagent holder(30) which is connected to the carrier gas input conduit upstream of a magnetic shut-off valve(20). In addition, a reagent supply tube(32) runs from the base of the reagent supply holder to the sample holder. A further magnetic shut-off valve(40) connecting the sample holder to atmosphere is controlled by a common control device(42) which also controls the inlet valve(20).
