Prodn. of CO-based fuel gases includes the step of reacting a C source with an alkali(ne earth) metal carbonate at ca. 1100 degrees C to form CO and the corresp. metal oxide. The carbonate is pref. CACO3 or na2CO3. The C source can be coal, lignite, heavy bitumen, wood, etc. The reaction is pref. carried out in a solar furnace. A specific process comprises (a) reacting Na2CO3 with the C source in a 1st solar furnace; (b) cooling the CO and reacting it with H2O to produce a CO2/H2 mixt.; (c) sepg. the H2 from the CO2/H2 mixt.; (d) dividing the CO2 into 2 equal fractions; (e) reacting the 1st CO2 fraction with Na2O from (a) to regenerate No2CO3; (f) reacting the 2nd CO2 fraction with C in a 2nd solar furnace at ca. 1100 degrees C to form CO; and (g) mixing the CO from (h) with the H2 from (c) to produce a fuel gas.
|
