The switches for controlling the pressing mechanism and the roller drive of the ironing machine are arranged in the carrier plate (22). The connection between the foot switch (7) and the switches is made via a switching rod (20) which is arranged so as to be longitudinally displaceable in the machine stand (5) and which makes it possible to actuate the switches in succession. The pressing mechanism and the roller drive can consequently be switched only in the working position of the ironing unit, and no electrical connecting leads are needed between the foot switch and the ironing unit. <IMAGE>
