The aim is for battery-powered clinical thermometers to have a service life of more than one year without a change of battery even when they are used several times daily. For this purpose, after a warming-up time of approx. 30 sec a measuring device carries out individual measurements of short duration in intervals. The respective measured value is stored in an intermediate value memory (3) and is not represented in an LCD (4) until at least two successive individual measurements have identical or virtually identical results. In a preferred exemplary embodiment, a bistable multivibrator (5) is provided whose output (Q) is used to control the supply voltage (U+, U-) and to control an intermediate value memory (3). One control input (S) of the bistable multivibrator (5) is fed a start command (IS), while after the measurement phase the second input (r) is fed a stop command (Ir) from an analog-to-digital converter (2). <IMAGE>
