Thin shell piston for IC engine - has deflector plate under piston top to prevent oil splashing from sump

The piston of a reciprocating internal combustion engine has a thin sheet top (a) with a skirt below it containing grooves for the piston rings. It is attached to a piston rod (d) by a gudgeon pin (c). A deflector plate (b) is fitted inside the skirt between the gudgeon pin and the top plate (a) of the piston. The deflector plate prevents oil from the sump and connecting rod from splashing on the underside of the piston plate (a). This prevents cooling of the piston plate and also heating of the oil. It thus enables the piston to operate at a higher which increases the overall efficiency of the engine.
