The steel sleeper for a railway track superstructure has side flanks bent back on both sides, and ribbed plates to hold the track fitted at gauge width intervals on the bearing surface. A lengthways groove (13) is incorporated in the bearing surface (12). Two ribbed plates (14, 15) are fitted on both sides of the groove in each case, facing each other. They are arranged so as to leave a gap (20) for passage of a screw shaft (22) while partially covering the groove. The ribbed plates may be welded to the sleeper. There may be an underlay plate on the base of the bedding for the rail (18), with two interfacing protrusions, pref. engaging in the gap between the two ribbed plates.
