The continuous welding of flexible metal strips travelling at >=30 metres/minute in a "V" and converging towards the welding zone, is effected using press. to force the strips together. A laser beam is optically focussed onto the root of the "V" to make the weld. Rolls are pref. employed to press the strips together, the pref. strips being made of the same or different metals: Al, Cu, brass, carbon- or stainless-steel; and the laser pref. has a power of 1 kW. The esp. pref. strips are both Al, 0.025-6.35 mm thick, which travel between two pressure rolls to form a junction welded by the laser beam; and laser power of >=1 kW may be used. Excellent welds can be obtd. at speeds up to 150 metres/minute using a CO2 laser. |
