1530690 Coalescing liquid droplets; separating oil and water MARINE CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN CO 9 April 1976 [10 April 1975] 14594/76 Heading B1D Droplets of a first liquid suspended in an immiscible second liquid, e.g. oil in water, are coalesced by ingesting the mixture into the voids of a porous, resiliently compressible and expansible matrix, e.g. foam plastics, immersed in the compressed state in the mixture, the ingestion occurring as the matrix expands from the compressed state whilst immersed in the mixture, holding the ingested mixture in the matrix in a quiescent state until all or substantially all of the droplets have settled and coalesced in the voids of the matrix and thereafter discharging the ingested liquids from by matrix by applying pressure. The matrix may be moved from a first ingestion station to a second purging station whilst the ingested mixture is settling therein. Figure 3 shows an apparatus for effecting the process comprising a casing 10 containing an upright cylinder 32 of framed polyurethane mounted for rotary motion. The cylinder 15 surrounded around a major arc by a stationary cylindrical shield 16 against which the cylinder 32 forms a sliding seal. A roller 64 compresses the polyurethane cylinder as it rotates as the part of its surface not covered by shield 16. Incoming mixture from inlet 73 is ingested by the re-expanding polyurethane cylinder and is carried by it, as it rotates, around to the other side of the roller whereat the mixture containing coalesced droplets is squeezed from the cylinder by the roller 64. A scraper mechanism 56 provides a seal to separate the inlet and outlet sides of the apparatus. Coalesced oil is removed by an upper outlet 80 and water flows under a baffle 84 to an outlet 86. As an alternative (Fig. 9 not shown) an elongated, vertically-mounted, endless band of polyurethane may be used instead of the cylindrical element 32. The apparatus is of use in oil refineries or for treatment of engine cooling water discharge and ships bilge or ballast waters. |
