MAGNETIC TAPE HEAD INDEXING MECHANISM A mechanism is provided for use in a cartridge-type tape player that is intended for positioning a sound recording and reproducing head relative to the different tracks of the tape. The mechanism includes first and second pawl members engaging a ratchet wheel with spring pressure thus holding the ratchet wheel firmly between themselves to preclude undesired rotation thereof while permitting regular indexing operation of the magnetic tape head. Alignment of the magnetic head with the different tracks of the tape is achieved by stepwise rotation of the ratchet wheel.
