The epoxy resin is prepd. by condensing an excess of a low mol. wt. (e.g. 350-1000) epoxy resin with an aminosubst. benzoic acid. The terminal epoxide gps. of the resulting condensate are reacted with a sec. amine and the carboxyl gps. in the prod. are then neutralised with a tert-amine or ammonia. The compsn. is used for coatings at a concn. of 20-30 vol. % in a solvent comprising 70-90 vol. % water. The carboxyl gps. giving water solubility are not attached via ether linkages and are less liable to split off by hydrolysis, leading to increased storage stability and resistance to food prods.
