A vehicle for a single package coating compsn. consists of a hydrolysed alkyl polysilicate (hydrolysis level 50-65%), an organic solvent and 3-5.5% ZnCl2 (based on the total hydrolyzate wt.). The hydrolyzate is obtd. by hydrolyzing the polysilicate (contg. about 40% SiO2) in the presence of an organic solvent, and water in an amt. of 0.08-0.21 mole per mole alkoxy gp. in the polysilicate at pH 1.0-6.5. The coating compsn. is obtd. by mixing the vehicle with particulate solids for >=0.5 hr. in an inert atmosphere and packaging the prod. The compsn. is free of hydrogen evolution, has a shelf-life of >=4 months and provides a hard abrasion-resistant coating on a substrate in 1-24 hrs. |
