Quenching device for hot coke pushed out of the chambers of a coke oven battery consists of a water tank along the coke side of the battery, with a bottom which rises from its deepest point near the oven block outwards. Parallel to the bottom plate, a perforated rocker plate is hinged at the top end away from the ovens and can be raised to discharge the quenched coke to the coke bench. The coke can now be kept in the water for a precisely defined time. It is a simple way of producing coke with a specified moisture content.
