The major proportion of the water required to service the lock is stored at the lock site, and is stored in multi-storey closed structures. The lock channel may be flanked by two columns of superimposed self-contained cells. The cells are horizontally opposed to one another, are of equal height, and are empty when the water in the lock is at the high level. The level is lowered gradually by draining the water into the cells in vertically descending order. The reverse process applies in filling the lock-channel, and a vol. of water equivalent to that of two storeys of cells is transferred to the lower reach during a cycle. The cells may be provided on one side only of the lock and include suitable valve gear.
|
