The breech mechanism for a double barrelled shotgun has an operating lever (1) attached by a hinge pin at the top of the breech (3) interconnected with another lever (23) behind it. This is in turn interconnected with the trigger (15). Behind the trigger, a release latch (5) projects rearwards from the trigger guard (4). The top of the intermediate lever (23) carries a tooth which is engaged by a locking pawl (14) above. This forms part of a release system, in which this lever (23) is pulled rearwards by a spring when the tooth is disengaged from the pawl when the barrel is swung into a predetermined angle. The bolt is pushed into its limit of engagement by the spring between two operating members.
