The recording surface (1) onto which the symbols are formed passes over a heated paper guide plate (39) having a large surface area. The plate comprises an insulated material (41) on which is laid a flat heating element (43) that can be brought directly into contact with the recording surface. The heating element is pref. a heating foil. The drying unit for use with an ink jet printer is designed to be cheap to manufacture, to require little power and to limit the amount of heat transmitted from the heater to the surrounding constructional elements.
