BENZIMIDAZOLES

The invention relates to new benzimidazoles of general formula I wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a trifluoromethyl group, an alkyl group containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a mercapto or an alkylmercapto group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a phenyl group(which is unsubstituted or is substituted by a fluorine atom, a methyl, hydroxyl, methylmercapto, methylsulfinyl, methylsulfonyl or dimethylamino group, or by from one to three methoxy groups); either A represents a hydrogen atom and B represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or A and B together represent a carbon-carbon bond; and either R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and R3 and C together represent an oxygen atom, or R3 represents a chlorine atom, a methylamino, morpholino or 4-methylpiperazino group and R2 and C together represent a nitrogen-carbon bond; and tautomers and acid addition salts thereof. The compounds in general possess useful pharmacological properties, in particular a hypotensive, antithrombotic and cardiotonic activity. Several processes for the preparation and interconversion of these compounds are described and exemplified. Examples of pharmaceutical compositions containing the new compounds are also given.
