The surface cladding item, e.g. a tile, has square top and bottom faces, the former with a pattern containing two or more lines ending at the sides. When the top surface is divided by an imaginary diagonal (2) into two halves, each half contains one or more lines (5-8), each starting and finishing at the sides of the square and in the same half. Each line starting and finishing point is at the same distance (d) from the nearest corner. The design allows sets of such tiles to be assembled into a number of different regular patterns.
