The machine for separating plastics sheet from paper in a refuse disposal system has a horizontal belt conveyor above which rotates a separator wheel discharging onto a take-off device forming a path for the separated plastics material. The separator wheel which rotates about an axis at right angles to the conveyor has hooked arms which lift the plastics film from the paper. This is assisted by an extractor fan at the end of a duct into which the separator wheel discharges. The duct then discharges into a hopper under the fan. In alternative designs, the separator wheel is replaced by a conveyor travelling upwards, with a hooked endless belt.
