Purification of effluent waters contg. ammonium and phenolic cpds. - using a stripping column in which no ammonia vapour passes through phenol stripping zone

Non-volatile ammonia-contg. cpds. are removed in the first zone of the column; phenolic cpds. are removed in the second zone; and volatile ammonia-contg. cpds. are removed in a third zone. The zone in which the phenolic cpds. are removed is positioned in the column such that no ammonia vapour can pass through it. Process allows volatile and non volatile ammonia cpds., and phenolic cpds. to be stripped from the effluent water in the same column. Removal of the phenolic cpds. requires acid conditions to prevail in the column, so that it is important to avoid the passage of ammonia vapour through the phenol-stripping section of the column.
