A small file for recording addresses, telephone numbers etc. consists of a rectangular plastics case (1) with a hinged lid (5). The lid has the letters of the alphabet inscribed along one edge which carries a cursor (6). The cursor has an extension which lies under the overlapping edges of the pages filed in the case (1). The lid (5) is held down by a catch (12). Pressing the finger on the catch (12) releases the lid (5) which flies open due to a torsion spring fitted in the hinge. The pages of the file are opened by the movement of the lid at the letter indicated by the cursor (6).
