Cleaning coke-oven door edges - using rotary tool transported by articulated arms and held against surfaces by springs, eliminating hand-work

Method comprises using an appts. which includes a stand which can be placed opposite a door, a mechanism mounted on the stand adapted to operate a cleaning tool and motors for actuating the mechanism. The mechanism incorporates an arm articulated on a support and a beam mounted with its centre at the other end of the arm and able to rotate about that centre. A tool carrier is mounted at one end of, and perpendicular to, the beam. In operation the arm rotates slowly and the beam carries the tool, which is rotating at e.g. 300 r.p. min, so that the side of the tool cleans one face and the nose of the tool cleans another face of the shaped element at the edge of the door which ensures gas-tight closure. Springs hold the tool against the surfaces in both directions. The angle of attack of the tool is maintained constant during the cleaning operation. Problems associated with the use of scrapers and brushes mounted on an endless chain, or a scraper actuated by a jack, necessitating considerable hand work in difficult conditions, are avoided.
