[Class 83 (iii)] In a device for indicating on a first. part of a machine-tool the movement of a tool relative to a second machine part which is itself movable relative to the first part (e.g. radial feed of a tool on a surfacing plate), an index member is fitted on an indicator slide which is actuated by the tool feed-shaft so that it moves in synchronism with the tool, the feed-shaft being connected to the tool through a differential mechanism. Rotary tool heads.-A lathe comprises a boring spindle 2, Fig. 4, and a surfacing plate 3, the latter having radial guides for a surfacing slide 6 which is fed by a nut 7 engaging a leadscrew 8. The screw is rotated by a bevelwheel 9 meshing with a gear-ring 11 rotatably mounted on the surfacing plate and driven from a hand- or motor-driven shaft 13 through a clutch 14, a shaft 12 and a differential 18. The cage of the differential has teeth engaging a gear-ring 19 fixed to the surfacing plate and the consequent rotation of the cage rotates the gear-ring 11 at the same speed as the plate so that the feed-screw is not rotated by the rotation of the plate. The indicator slide, Figs. 2 and 3, comprises an outer slide 25 sliding in ways 26 on the lathe headstock and an inner slide 24 carrying a nut 23 engaged by a screw 22 which is rotated by a worm-wheel 21 engaging worm teeth 20 formed on the clutchplate; the transmission ratio is preferably such that the surfacing and indicator slides move through equal distances. A plate 27 closes the opening which would be left by the slides in their uppermost position. The outer slide carries two scales 29 arranged with their markings reading in opposite directions and adjustable relatively to each other to compensate for play in the drive, according to the direction of movement. The slide 25 also carries two index members 28, having vernier markings so that they may be adjusted against their respective scales, and the position of the tool on the surfacing plate may be gauged by observing the position of the index members relative to a fixed point, such as a switch 30, which may be operated by the index members to stop the feed-motor when the required movement of the surface slide is completed. Feed motions.-The device may be applied to a tool-slide which is fed relative to a table moved rectilinearly. |
